When I sit down with a client, after I have got to know them and their business I will ask them a simple question “Who is your customer“, and most of the time I just get a blank stare, or they will reply the person who buys from me. Well yes I suppose that is right, but let me again ask you the question and take a closer look at it.

Who Is Your Customer?

A strange question you may think, but once you get to understand the term, your business will just grow and grow, and as you get to know Who your customer is, those sales will just keep on grown. So lets have a closer look at Who Is Your Customer.

@ What do they look like – Where do they go to school, college, work – What type of food do they eat – What type of Music – What types of films – What type of books and the list goes on and on.

@ In your business plan, you need to site down and write a clear picture of who you customer is.

A quick example could be something like this :

” My customer is a 20′s something single female. She like to go out for meals 2 times a week and relaxes at the trendy clubs and bars at the weekend. She buys clothes from designer shops and spends money each week on skin care and make up. She works full-time and has credit cards. She lives in an up market part of town. She lives for clubbing and music, and spends 3 weeks a year on clubbing music holidays. She buys womans style and fashion magazines. She has a high percentage of disposable money each month which she saves some and spends the rest on her life-style ”

So what does this tell us about “Who Is Your Customer” – It tells us some of the following things :

@ She is employed
@ She has money to spend
@ She has a high amount of disposable income

As you can see this customer is an ideal one, as well as having money and a credit card, she has a lot of interests we could market to. But an important factor is she is employed has spare money and a credit card all of which are important if we need her to buy from us. So when you are doing market research you need to sit down and write out “Who Is Your Customer” and then you will notice your business and sales growing.
