eBay Or Own Website Which Is Best?

When consulting with clients people often ask “eBay Or Own Website Which Is Best?” and time after time I always say eBay. No this is not because I sell on eBay nor is it because I am an eBay Consultant. I am an independent consultant and always put my client first, and if I believe having your own site best for you I would tell you. But if you are selling a product then I will always take you down the eBay route first.

So why do I feel eBay is far better than setting up your own e-commerce site?  Well there are many and it would take many pages and articles to cover the points, but in the short time I have with you today, I hope to explain to you why I believe eBay is best. So let’s get to the meat of today’s subject.

eBay Or Own Website Which Is Best?

@ eBay is a well established service and site and has been in businesses since the mid 1990′s  - Your own site is brand new. Google like sites that have been around a long time.

@ eBay spends millions a year on adverts, and have been doing this since they began – Your site, unless you have money to burn, will not be able to afford this.

@ eBay is a brand name and is recognized and respected all over the world – You will have a new site, unknown brand name and will have to work long and hard to build up the respect of people around the world.

@ eBay has massive traffic coming to their sites day in and day out – Your business is brand new, and it will take time to get traffic to your site in the volume that eBay can manage.

@ eBay has a merchant service already built in and there is no coding needed from you – Having your own e-commerce site will require you to have a merchant providing added to it.

@ People love eBay and when they need something, quite often this is the first place they come to, before they buy – With your own site you will have to gain this respect and this will take time.

So is eBay Or Own Website Which Is Best?

I hope from the above examples you can see when you are starting out it is far better to have a presence on eBay. You will get the traffic, the people coming to look and then buy from you. You can start out small then expand into different levels of shops and then and only then when you have been having success and making money, take a look at opening your own e-commerce site. But who knows you too may fall in love with eBay and never look back or change. So eBay Or Own Website Which Is Best? For me eBay

How To Re-purpose Your Marketing Material

A question I often will get is how do you re-purpose your marketing material for your niche. Now with all the latest reports and guides that are doing the rounds at the moment, you may be think that this is something new and hot. Well sorry to disappoint you, the art of re-purposing the written word is nothing new at all, and it is something that has been going on for many years – in fact since the printing press began.

Yes there are lots of these reports and guides out there that tell you how to do it, and how it works so well in the Internet Marketing Business world field. But please listen this works in any field you may choose and if I am honest it works even better in some of the smaller niches, as it has not been over used.

Now some of you may be thinking what does it mean to re-purpose your marketing material, so to help you understand what it means let me give you an example of what it can look like.

@ Take for example the book Harry Potter.

@ The book has been turned into a movie

@ The movie into DVD

@ DVD into spoken word

@ Spoken word into a range of clothing

@ Then you have the fair ground rides

@ Also badges, pens, and loads of other items

@ Food

So you see from a book you can get a whole range of other related items, that have the potential of driving traffic or sales to each other. In fact someone who sees the film, may then go and buy the book. It is a win – win situation.

How To Re-Purpose Your Material

Let’s say that you have written a blog post and added it to your blog, now many people would stop there and leave it at that and loose out on a lots of traffic to their site.

  • You could re-write or spin the article and add it to an Article Directory or a few.
  • You could read it out and turn it into an mp3 and make a mini podcast and add it to iTunes.
  • Make a PowerPoint and a voice over and add it to YouTube
  • Submit it as a Press Release and add it to the Online Press Release Companies

The above is a quick example what you can do with just one simple blog post. Remember the more places you put your name out there the more back links you get, the more back links you get the more traffic and the more traffic means more sales. Also some of the sites allow people to share the items with others, so in a short period of time you can be all over the internet.

As time goes on I will add other ideas and thoughts as to how you can re-purpose your marketing material and generate more traffic and thus get more sales.

Permission Marketing

Earlier today while I was doing some listing on eBay I was listen to a podcast by Seth Godin talking all about market and permission marketing. If you have not heard of Seth before go and do a quick Google of him and watch, listen and learn from the man and then put into action what you have learnt. But one of the stories that he told really struck home with me and got me thinking how can we put this into place into our eBay business, and with a few tweaks I think we could and make it work.

The story went something like this. -

Hallmark Cards are one of the largest retailers of cards and the people who visit their shops on a regular basis in the USA buy on average 52 cards a year not including Christmas, but for some reason card sales dropped off in July. And it appeared it was just July and then in August they picked up again. This got one of their employees thinking how they could make sales and make profits in July, so he came up with the idea of selling collectible Christmas decorations and sell them in July.

Now when you first hear this you think who would buy Christmas Decorations in July, then come home and store them to Christmas and bring them out and put them up……….. well hundreds and thousands did. And if my memory serves me right in year two they sold $100 million and made a profit of $92 Million. (but please do not quote me on this). But the story does not stop there.

Remember how I said they were collectible?  Well when someone bought an item the sales person asked them a question or two. They said would they like some advance warning when the new decoration was out, most of the people said yes and gave over Name, and Address. Roll on year two, the cards all went out in med- July 24 hours later the Hallmark Shops were all sold out of stock and that is where the $100 Million sales came in and this built year in and out.

But also something else happened, when Christmas came around and that first decoration went up, people had friends around and showed off this new Hallmark Decoration and of course they loved it and asked where it came from. Their friend said it was a collectors club and next July when they get the card telling them the date when the new one will be out they would take them with them.

Hallmark have never had to do large advertising it has all been done by postcards and permission marketing.

So How Can You Add Permission Marketing To Your Business ?

Let’s say you sell a range of products that are only available certain times a year, you could build up either a snail mail list or an email list and when the time comes for these items to be in stock and you have them listed on the site, you send out an email and let them know. These people have already said they want to know, they like the product and they have money waiting to buy from you. This is permission marketing.

Or you sell a certain range of items that are quite hard to find, you build up a list of buyers of this item and when they come into stock, you just send out an email.

In all these cases the buyer has said “I give you permission to market to me” – or they are ready and willing to spend money with you.

We all sign up to eBay and list our items and then because we have paid our listing fees, shop fees if we have a shop and then when the item sell our final valuation fees we just sit back and wait, for good old eBay to sell the items for us. Well it is true eBay will work hard for us and will market our listings for us while they are on the site, but they are also doing this for millions of other people at the same time. Yes they do a good job, but this is a business we are in either a part-time or full-time, we also need to do some work.

Right now I can hear some of you moaning and saying “Hey Andrew, I have taken those pictures and written a quick listing, what else, it is now up to eBay” when I hear this I tell them that I understand where they are coming from, but point out to them, that if they just spent a little time each day or week in tweaking their listings they would help them in eBay search and also in Google and the other search engines. And it is nothing hard or complex, you just need to get serious about your business and say yes, I am willing to go the extra mile with it and that you are prepared to put in just 30 minutes a day to help those items sell for a higher price and sell on a regular basis.

The first area you need to look at, and again being open and honest with you here, you should have done this action way before writing or re-writing a title or description and that is research. Yes I want you to have this engraved on your mind 24/7………………………………. Research, Research, Research. If you can get this part right then you are a good way in to making a success on sites such as eBay. Research in your marketplace, Research your product, Research the competition, and Research those keywords. In fact each one of those is a serious of articles on their own, but for now I want to talk about Research the competition.

Research your competition

You can do this the hard way by looking at the different websites and eBay shops where they sell the types of items you are interested in selling. Make a note of :

  • The colours they use in sales letters
  • The words they use
  • The types of pictures they use
  • A long or short sales piece
  • And the type of keywords they use

Now before I get any complaints I do not want you to copy, I just want you to look and see what these top sellers are doing and only look at the sellers who are selling multiple items a day in your niche or are regular sellers in your niche. You may remember that that I said hard way just above and yes there is an easier way to do some research and that is with some eBay research software from a company called Terapeak. eBay Research by Terapeak will give you some of the answers above and will present it to you in away you can understand and then put into action. But remember you need to do the work and then put it in place and take the necessary work to carry it out.

Listing Goals

Can you believe that we are already well over half way through the year. For those of us who make a living selling online most of us have thought if not already ordered our Holiday and Christmas lines. Yes it sounds very frightening but Christmas is only a few short months away, and our customers will soon be buying Christmas items. In fact if you do some research you will find many people have already listed and sold Christmas / Holiday lines.

So what are Listing Goals? A listing goal is something that you commit to on a regular basis. For instance you might say I want to list 200 items a month. Now that may sound a lot, but what you need to do is to break that down into daily amounts. So we take the 200 lists and divide that by 30 days, and the amount we come out at is just under 7 items a day. Now what you need to think, can you manage that number each and everyday? As you write your listing goals, you need to think how many items have I listed in the past and if that number is only one a week, you may need to adjust the daily toltal.

Once you have hit the daily listing goal for a few weeks, you may feel like upping the amount you list. Something to remember notice I say listings not items. You can have as many items in each listing as you like, but I am talking about separate listings. eBay is no different from any other online or offline business, the more you list or stock the more you sell. You need to think like a buyer, how often would you go to a shop that only had a few items and the stock never changed? Now let us flip the coin, if the shop was full of items, and the stock was always changing you would keep going back time after time seeing what was new, and not only seeing but buying as well.

Well the same goes for eBay, and the old saying is still true today as it was all those years ago. “The more you list, the more you sell” So right now take a pen and paper and write down a listing goal, and then commit to it. Have Fun.

As we approach the end of another year and thoughts turn to 2010 de-clutter 1and all those New Year   resolutions, something that a lot of people think is, de-clutter and lets get rid of all of those items I no longer use, we put them in a black black or several and to the tip we go.

Well stop right there, by all means de-clutter your home but do not go to the tip with those items you could be throwing away hundreds of pounds in cash. Sell your items on eBay. Spend the Christmas period when all the parties are over and start to list.

Very soon your home will be de-cluttered and you will have some de-clutter 2extra cash in your pocket to help pay all those bills that will soon be dropping through your door.

eBay Money Saving Tips – 2

Todays money saving for helping you save money on eBay is looking at how and where you list your items on eBay.

Now many of us often list an item we are selling in two categories while at times there maybe an need for this and hands up, I have and do list in two at times. But what I would like you to do is to sit down and think do I need to do this to make sales or am I doing it because everyone else is doing it.

Take time out and do some online research in your niche, are other powersellers in your niche using the one product two categories approach. If they are then you may need it for your niche.

A good way to test is to run two auctions one with two categories and one with just the one and see your results.

Now I am going to say at times you may sell a product where you have just one of them and this product crosses over into two areas then if this happens use the two categories.

Happy eBaying and let me know your thoughts

As an eBay Education Specialist one of the top questions that I am asked is “How can I reduce the fees I am paying” I normally answer them the fees that they pay are already cheap………… You should try owning a brick and mortor store.

So I have decided to do some short articles outlining some quick ways you can save money on your ebay listing fees, and by the time this series has finished I hope you will do, and believe me it will both suprise you and help your business go to the next level.

Now I am going to be honest here, unless you understand where your money is being spent in your eBay business you will never have a large successful and profitable business nor will you be able to make savings. For how can you make savings when you do not know what you are already spending?

eBay bless them have once again been ten steps ahead of us and have things in place to help us. If you go along to your seller account, and select your latest eBay invoice and save it to an excel type program.(Excel or Google Spreadsheets or any of the free ones out there Once it has been saved you will then need to sort it via the 4th column (The fourth Column is the fee type.) by sorting by this column you will see straight away what you are spending and if you are over or even under spending.  For example If you are spending extra on a bold listing you need to ask yourself, do I really need these listings? Or if you are not spending anything or very little on lets say featured listing and your niche needs featured listing you need to sit down and work on it.

As Education Specialists we can help you and give you advice, but only you know your business and what works in your business. And only you know your business stats.

Well thats it for today, look out for some money saving tips.
