Falling In Love

When people get in to their own online (or offline) business they will normally sell products that they feel at home with. Now there is nothing wrong with this at all, and as an consultant I will normally encourage people to do this, but when I am back with the people I ask them are you “Falling In Love” with the item or product range – or worse still the supply source. Of course I am not talking about the physical type of love, but the type when you get attached to the product.

Again let me say that there is nothing wrong in selling stuff that you love and have a passion for, but the danger comes when you are so in love with the item or the product that you cannot see the danger signs. It is rather like a relationship is one person is so madly in love with the person they cannot see faults and cracks in the relationship, until it just falls apart.

@ Falling In Love With Supplier – You have just started out in business and have come across a wonderful product supplier who go out of their way to help you get started, they give you good rates and discounts. They offer free shipping and handling and always through in some free items. You feel attatched to this company after all they helped you when no one else would. Soon you are falling in love with them and even when other companies come calling with offers and deals you say no. When you hear rumours that this company is ripping people off, you just laugh and say no way they are great,  love them. Then you send a large order your largest yet, and they say because it is so big, please can you send the cash up front. You are now successful so say yes. A few days go by and no rder, a week nothing, you pick up the phone and it just rings and rings. Then you get an email saying sorry the company has done a runner…………………….. You sit there stunned, how could you have been conned, I know this company I love them and they love me. Yes you may love them, but sadly they do not love you. For months you were being warned and declined the warning signs. One of the dangers of falling in love with a supplier.

@ Falling In Love With A Product – This is along the same lines as the above. You have a product that you love and that does sell, but other time new models come out and newer and better ones are being produced by other companies. But you love your product it sells, it works and it makes money. All those little warning signs that keep getting flagged up on a daily basis you ignore, even when TV programs tell you a new and better model is coming out, and when you get an email offering you a stack of your item for next to nothing you jump at the chance, and think wow I am now making 10.00 an item instead of 3.00. But days, weeks, months go by and they do not sell. You see a new and better model has come along and because you were so in love with the original item you never saw the danger signs.

Yes sell products and deal with suppliers that you love, but avoid falling in love with them as you will never see the warning and danger signs because your love will hide them all from you.
